Local AttractionsChichester is a cathedral city in West Sussex, within the historic County of Sussex, South-East England. It has a long history as a settlement; its Roman past including the nearby Fishbourne Roman Palace and its subsequent importance in Anglo-Saxon times are only its beginnings. It is the seat of a bishopric, with a 12th century cathedral, and is home to some of the oldest churches and buildings in Great Britain. Chichester is also a transport hub, and the centre for culture in the region, with a Festival theatre and two art galleries. Nearby Chichester Harbour, together with the South Downs and the 1800 year old city walls, provide opportunities for outdoor pursuits. West Sussex County Council and Chichester District Council are major employers in Chichester, along with Rolls-Royce Motor Cars assembly plant at nearby Westhampnett. Boatbuilding is an important industry along the coast. Many people from the northern parts of the district commute to work in London, using the A3 road or the railways from Portsmouth to London Waterloo station and Littlehampton to London Victoria station. Apart from the geographical landmarks, Chichester District contains Chichester Cathedral, Goodwood Racecourse, Halnaker Windmill and Cowdray House a ruined Tudor mansion. The large inlet known as Chichester Harbour and the headland of Selsey Bill are conspicuous features of the coast. Local attractions also include the world famous Festival of Speed , Goodwood Revival and the week long summer festival of Glorious Goodwood Horseracing. All staged every year on the nearby Goodwood Estate.
