What Makes a Room Outside Conservatory Different?
A conservatory is a glazed extension with a predominantly glass roof and walls, designed to bring natural light into your home while connecting your living space with your garden. Most conservatories have at least 75% glazed roof area and 50% glazed walls — creating a room that feels open, bright and distinctly different from a standard brick extension.
What sets a Room Outside conservatory apart is the detail. Every project is individually designed around your home’s architecture, your living requirements and your budget. We work in timber, aluminium and premium UPVC, and offer our New Generation Glass — an advanced glazing system designed to help block up to 80% of solar heat while maintaining natural light levels. In practice, this can significantly reduce the need for blinds in summer and help retain warmth during colder months.
We have been designing and installing conservatories across the South of England since 1973. That experience shapes every aspect of a project, from understanding local planning requirements to recommending the right material for your property type.
Key Benefits
Custom Conservatory Styles: Timber, uPVC, Aluminium & Glass
Four things we do differently that premium homeowners consistently value.
Individual Design, Not Templates
Every conservatory starts with a home visit and a blank sheet. We design around your architecture, your proportions and how you actually want to use the space — not from a catalogue of standard sizes.
New Generation Glass
Our advanced glazing option is designed to help block up to 80% of solar heat while maintaining natural light. The practical benefit is a conservatory that can stay noticeably more comfortable in summer — often reducing the need for blinds — and helps retain more warmth during the colder months.
Insured Guarantees
Depending on product and location, we offer up to a 10-year structural guarantee backed by independent UK insurers. Product-specific warranties cover glazing, roofing and mechanical components separately.
Planning and Building Expertise
We handle Permitted Development assessments, planning applications where required, and building regulations submissions. Over 50 years of project experience across the South East means we understand what local authorities expect.

Which Conservatory Style Suits Your Home?
The right style depends on your property, how you plan to use the space, and the visual effect you want to achieve. Here is a practical guide to help you choose.
Victorian Conservatory
Choose this if your home has period character and you want the conservatory to look like it has always been part of the building. The multi-faceted bay front adds architectural presence and creates an elegant, light-filled sitting room or entertaining space. Works particularly well on Victorian, Edwardian and older cottage-style properties where detailing matters.
- Multi-faceted bay front with decorative cresting
- Suits period homes, townhouses and character properties
- Ideal as a sitting room, reading room or entertaining space
Edwardian Conservatory
The most practical choice if usable floor space is a priority. The rectangular footprint means furniture, dining tables and sofas can be placed easily against straight walls — something that is harder with curved bay designs. The clean lines suit a broad range of property styles, from 1900s terraces through to newer builds. If your main goal is a family room or a dining room extension, this is often the strongest starting point.
- Rectangular layout for easy furniture placement
- Versatile — suits most property ages and styles
- Particularly effective as a kitchen-diner or family living space
Lean-To Conservatory
The right choice when height is restricted. If you have a bungalow, a single-storey rear extension, or a property where the eaves are low, a lean-to design works within these constraints without compromising on light or space. The simple pitched roof also suits homeowners who prefer a clean, contemporary look rather than a traditional conservatory profile.
- Low-profile roof — ideal where height is limited
- Clean, contemporary aesthetic
- Suits bungalows, height-restricted plots and modern homes
P-Shape Conservatory
Consider this when you want two connected but distinct living areas within a single extension — for example, a kitchen-dining space that flows into a separate sitting area, or a garden room that adjoins a home office. This design requires a reasonably wide rear elevation and suits larger detached or semi-detached homes where a standard single-space conservatory would feel undersized for the property.
- Creates two distinct zones in one extension
- Needs a wider rear elevation to work well
- Suits larger homes where a single room would feel too modest
T-Shape Conservatory
A design for properties where the conservatory needs to match the scale and ambition of the existing building. The central projection creates strong architectural presence from the garden, with light entering from multiple directions. Typically chosen for substantial detached homes, country properties or period houses where a smaller conservatory would look out of proportion.
- Central projection for visual impact and multi-aspect light
- Proportionally suited to larger, substantial properties
- Often used as a grand living space or garden entertaining room
Timber, Aluminium or Premium UPVC?
The material you choose affects how your conservatory looks, how it performs, and what maintenance it will need over the years. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose the right option for your project.
Hardwood Timber
Timber is the natural choice for homeowners who want warmth, depth and craftsmanship. It suits period properties particularly well — Georgian, Victorian, Edwardian and country homes — where the conservatory needs to look and feel like a considered part of the original architecture, not a modern addition.
We use oak, sapele and accoya, each selected for structural stability and long-term durability. U‑values as low as 1.2 W/m²K are achievable with double glazing. Timber can be stained, painted or left natural. It does require periodic repainting or re-oiling (typically every 5–8 years), but well‑maintained hardwood can last 50 years or more.
Aluminium
Aluminium frames are the slimmest available, which means more glass area and cleaner sightlines. This makes aluminium the natural fit for modern, contemporary or minimalist properties where you want the structure to feel light and the views to dominate.
Its inherent strength also means aluminium can span larger openings with thinner profiles than timber or UPVC — useful where you want floor‑to‑ceiling panels or wide sliding doors. Thermally broken profiles achieve U‑values around 1.4 W/m²K. Aluminium is virtually maintenance‑free, extremely durable, and available in a wide range of powder‑coated RAL colours. Lifespan is typically 45+ years.
Premium UPVC
Modern premium UPVC has advanced well beyond the basic white frames of the 1990s. Today’s profiles offer strong thermal efficiency (U‑values as low as 1.2 W/m²K with advanced glazing), consistent colour retention, and a range of finishes including convincing woodgrain effects and flush sash designs that sit comfortably on both traditional and modern properties.
The defining advantage is effectively zero maintenance — no repainting, no oiling, no special treatment. Premium UPVC delivers excellent performance and long‑term ease of ownership. Expected lifespan is 25–35 years.
New Generation Glass: The year‑round comfort option
All our conservatories can be specified with New Generation Glass — an advanced glazing system that blocks up to 80% of solar heat gain while maintaining high light transmission. The result is a conservatory that stays noticeably cooler in summer and warmer in winter, often eliminating the need for blinds. It also provides meaningful noise reduction compared to standard glazing.

What Our Customers Say
Independently verified reviews from Google. These are real homeowners sharing their experience of working with Room Outside — unedited and in their own words.
“I recently moved into a house with a conservatory put up by Room Outside twenty five years ago which had never been serviced during that time and was in an extremely bad condition. It has needed a complete renovation carried out by the excellent service manager Matt and assistant Warwick, both of whom worked extremely hard throughout and were very polite and pleasant to have around. Matt was extremely knowledgeable and paid great attention to detail in all aspects of the work with the result that I am totally delighted with the appearance of the restored room — truly a five star service resulting in a beautiful room which it is now a great pleasure to spend time in.”

Conservatory FAQs
Straightforward answers to the questions we are asked most often by homeowners considering a conservatory project.
A bespoke conservatory from Room Outside typically costs from £25,000 to £60,000+, depending on size, style, materials and site requirements. Lean-to and Edwardian designs generally start at the lower end, while P-shape and T-shape configurations sit toward the higher end. We provide a detailed quotation after a free home visit, so you can see exactly what your project will cost before making any commitment.
Most conservatories fall under Permitted Development Rights and do not require a formal planning application, provided they meet criteria around size, height and proximity to boundaries. However, rules are different for conservation areas, listed buildings and certain other designations. We check this during the initial home visit and manage any applications that are needed.
New Generation Glass is an advanced glazing system designed to help block up to 80% of solar heat gain while maintaining high levels of natural light. The practical benefit is a conservatory that can stay noticeably more comfortable in summer — often reducing the need for blinds — and helps retain more warmth during the colder months. It can also provide meaningful noise reduction compared to standard conservatory glass. We offer New Generation Glass as an option across our full range of conservatories.
A typical project takes 8 to 12 weeks from confirmed order to completion, covering manufacturing, groundworks, frame installation, glazing and finishing. More complex designs or projects that require planning approval may take longer. We set out a clear timeline at the quotation stage so you know exactly what to expect.
It depends on what matters most to you. Conservatories offer maximum natural light through their fully glazed roofs and a strong visual connection with the garden. Orangeries have a solid perimeter roof with a central lantern, which provides better thermal performance and a more built-in architectural feel — but typically costs 20–40% more. Our design team can talk through the differences during a home visit and recommend the right option for your property. See our orangeries →
Depending on product and location, we offer up to a 10-year structural guarantee backed by independent UK insurers, alongside separate product-specific warranties covering glazing, roofing and mechanical components. The exact guarantee terms are confirmed in your quotation before you commit to anything.
With modern double‑glazing and New Generation Glass, our conservatories achieve U‑values as low as 1.2 W/m²K for the roof and 1.4 W/m²K for walls — far exceeding older single‑glazed structures. This means they can be used comfortably year‑round with minimal additional heating. Many customers report that their conservatory becomes the warmest room in the house during winter when the sun is shining.
Timber conservatories, when properly maintained, can last 50+ years; aluminium structures 45+ years; and premium UPVC 25–35 years. Our 10‑year structural guarantee covers the frame and installation, and we provide maintenance guidance to help you maximise the lifespan of your conservatory. Regular cleaning and occasional checks of seals and moving parts are all that is usually required.
